Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Ngorongoro is a highland conservation landscape centered on the famous volcanic crater. Safari vehicles descend from the rim to the crater floor, where grassland, woodland, marsh and permanent water support a high concentration of wildlife.
A crater game drive is normally planned as one focused day because vehicle access follows designated descent and ascent roads and operating rules. Lions, buffalo, hyenas, hippos, gazelles and other wildlife are commonly associated with the crater, while black rhino sightings are possible but never guaranteed.
Planning a Visit
The highland rim can be cool, especially early in the morning and at night. Accommodation ranges from properties on or near the rim to lodges in the Karatu highlands. Location affects both price and the time required to reach the crater gate.
Ngorongoro fits naturally between Serengeti and the Arusha/Tarangire side of the northern circuit. It can also be linked with Lake Eyasi, Lake Manyara or southern Serengeti depending on the season and total number of days.
