Mafia Island
Mafia Island is a quieter Indian Ocean destination south of Zanzibar, known for marine environments, diving and a slower tourism pace. Parts of the surrounding waters are protected within a marine park.
Diving and snorkeling conditions vary by site and season. Whale shark excursions are associated with particular months, but sightings are never guaranteed and responsible operators should follow marine guidelines.
Planning a Visit
Mafia is reached by air from the mainland. Accommodation and activity options are more limited than Zanzibar, which is part of the island’s appeal for travelers seeking a quieter setting.
It can be combined with Nyerere, Dar es Salaam or other southern Tanzania travel when flight connections line up well.
Practical Notes
- Final travel times depend on road, flight and park operating conditions.
- Wildlife and weather are natural and cannot be guaranteed.
- Accommodation should be selected by location as well as comfort level.
- Ruhala Tours can combine this destination with other Tanzania regions when the total itinerary remains practical.
